The Baldhip Rose, also commonly known as the Wood Rose, is a medium-sized shrub with a height at maturity of 4-5 feet. It is native to the West Coast of North America from the coastal region of British Columbia to Washington State, Oregon, Northern California as well as sections of Idaho and Montana. In the spring, the clustered green elliptical-shaped leaves emerge with buds, which erupt into vibrant pink fragrant flowers in late spring to early summer. The species is also protected with prickly thorns. In the fall, rosehip fruit form which persist into summer. It is a hardy species, with a tolerance of different soil types, but it prefers moist soils and is adaptable to full sun locations or partial shade. In the wild, it can often be found inter-mixed in the understories of coniferous forests.
The Baldhip Rose is adaptable to a wide range of soil types. It prefers moist soil, but can tolerate drier soil. It prefers partial shade exposure, but can tolerate limited full sun exposure.
