Ground Cover Shrubs
The Coastal Strawberry, also commonly known as the Sand Strawberry or Beach Strawberry is a small, spreading shrub which reaches a mature height of 6-24 inches. It is native to the West Coast of North America, including Alaska, British Columbia, Washington State, Oregon and California. In the spring months, white flowers form in the spring, among its dark green spikey leaves, which yield to edible red fruit in the summer months. The shrubs spreading nature makes it a good choice for ground cover and even lawn replacements in trouble areas. In the wild, it is commonly found on coastal bluffs, sand dunes and other coastal areas.
The Coastal Strawberry is adaptable to a range of well drained soil types, including less fertile sandy and rocky soils. It prefers mostly dry soil conditions but tolerant of slightly moist soil. It can grow in full sun, partial shade or full shade conditions.
