Ground Cover Shrubs
The Deer Fern is a small, bushy member of the fern family, with a mature height of only 8-24 inches. It is native to Western North America, including Alaska, British Columbia, Washington State, Idaho, Oregon and Northern California. Its bright green branches and leaves (fronds) are distinct in their ladder-like appearance. In the wild, it is commonly found in and around coniferous forests. Its profile is a mostly-upright growth pattern, making it an adaptable choice for ground cover or individual shrubs.
The Deer Fern prefers rich, slightly acidic soil, preferably with decomposing leaves or organic matter mixed in but can adapt to a range of soil types. It prefers moist soil, but can tolerate wet soil, but generally not standing water. It prefers full shade exposure, but can tolerate partial shade conditions.
