Coniferous Evergreen Tree
The Mountain Hemlock, also commonly known as the Black Hemlock and Hemlock Spruce is a medium sized evergreen, which can reach heights of 130 feet. It is native to Western North America including British Columbia, Alaska, Washington State, Oregon, California and Nevada as well as Idaho and Montana. Bark ranges from charcoal grey to reddish brown in color. The crown of the species is slender and cone shaped with short needles. Cones are medium sized in comparison to other hemlock species, averaging 1-3" in length, purple in color when immature and taking on a brownish color when mature. In the wild, it is commonly found along coastal mountain ranges, mostly found along exposed and semi-exposed ridges and slopes and in mixed coniferous forests as well as in pure stands.
The Mountain Hemlock prefers sheltered areas with moist, well drained soil but adaptable to drier soil. It prefers partial shade to full shade conditions but can adapt to full sun exposure if the soil conditions are adequate.
