Coniferous Evergreen Tree
The Sitka Spruce, also commonly known as the Tideland Spruce or Menzies Spruce is a large species of spruce, common to the far Western areas of North America and which can reach upwards of 200 feet in height. It is native to British Columbia, Alaska, Washington State, Oregon and Northwest California. The needles are 1 to 1 1/2 inch in length, are stiff and sharp and range in color from yellowish green to a bluish green. The bark is grey in color and smooth on younger trees, eventually taking on a purplish-brown color. Cones range from 1 to 4 inches in length, which hang down on branches and are thinly scaled. In the wild, it is commonly found in coastal regions will high annual rainfall and cooler climate.
The Sitka Spruce prefers moist, well drained and acidic soil but it can adapt to drier soils. It prefers full sun exposure, but tolerant of partial shade conditions, but growth will be slowed if sun exposure is inadequate.
